Jean Ashworth Bartle Choral Conductor

Jean Ashworth Bartle is recognized as one of the world's most distinguished conductors of Youth Choirs and as a respected mentor to many emerging and middle conductors. As an author she has written two books, Lifeline for Children's Choir Directors (Warner Chappell) and Sound Advice (Oxford); she is also the co-author of a series of books on sight singing and ear-training, A Young Singer's Journey (Hinshaw). As an editor she edits three music series for earthsongs, Hinshaw and WarneréChappell. As the conductor of the Toronto Children's Chorus from 1978-2007 Ms. Bartle conducted over a dozen highly distinguished CDs, toured four continents, built the choir from 45 singers to 350 singers, developed a comprehensive artistic and administrative support staff, appeared at numerous ACDA National Conventions, and won many international first prize awards including the international Let the People Sing Award given by the European Broadcasting Union. She has had the honour of working closely with many internationally distinguished artists including Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir David Willcocks, Christopher Plummer, Michael Tippett, Robert Shaw and Krysztof Penderecki.
As a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator she has worked in over forty states, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Finland, Israel, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. As a proud Canadian she has worked in all ten provinces and for her distinguished artistry, vision, and commitment to young people and choral music, she was awarded Canada's highest civilian honour, the Order of Canada.
